MKO carried an Environmental Impact Assessment for Coillte CGA to provide access to an area of forestry located in Barnahowna, Co. Mayo. The forestry is currently land locked and was planted using manual labour during the 1960’s with no access route provided for mechanical equipment for the extraction of timber during felling. The proposal included an access road of approximately 2.4 kilometres length.
The proposed development was the subject of an Article 6(3) Screening Assessment and a Natura Impact Assessment, in line with Articles 6(3) and 6(4) of the Habitats Directive (Directive 92/43/EEC). This assessment was carried out in tandem with the Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) due to the sites proximity to designated European Site.
As part of the overall Environmental Impact Assessment, MKO provided input into the overall project design and construction methodology in conjunction with Coillte CGA to provide the most suitable design along with appropriate mitigation for the development of the access road to ensure protected sites are not impacted during the works
