The primary aim of the project is to provide detailed and accurate knowledge of the wetlands in County Westmeath in order to inform planning policy and prioritise future field work in the wetlands of the county. Wetland habitats in Westmeath and across the country have declined as a result of conversion to another land-use, e.g. intensive agriculture or forestry, peat extraction for fuel or compost, and water pollution. As Westmeath County Council have policies for the protection of wetlands, this Desktop Survey of Wetland Sites in County Westmeath directly addresses this commitment.
