Funding confirmed for new marine research vessel for Ireland in Budget 2021

A new marine research vessel has been allocated funding to replace the current 23 year old Celtic Voyager. The new modern research vessel will be 52.8 metre long. The vessel will be based in Galway and will be used by the Marine Institute, other State agencies and universities, to undertake fisheries research, oceanographic and environmental research, seabed mapping and other multidisciplinary surveys. This will enable Ireland to undertake critical research work and further our understanding of the oceans off the Irish coast which offers a significant natural resource.
