Senior Research Ornithologist

MKO is a specialist environmental and planning consultancy, based in Galway City. The company employs over 55 people and provides an extensive range of specialist services in the fields of planning, ecology, ornithology, EIAR’s and environmental management.


MKO is seeking to recruit a Senior Research Ornithologist to join its Ornithology Team.

As a Senior Research Ornithologist, the successful candidate will be responsible designing, managing and delivering new applied ornithology research projects that address industry-specific issues across a range of sectors. The research projects will be identified by the successful candidate in conjunction with the other senior members of the MKO Ornithology Team.

The successful candidate will engage with stakeholders across Government, academia, the NGO and voluntary sectors to successfully deliver the research projects being undertaken. Knowledge of the key personnel in these areas and research projects already underway, would be important prerequisites for prospective candidates.

The ideal candidate will have experience of conducting applied scientific research projects in the field of ornithology, and be enthusiastic about furthering scientific research in new areas. The successful candidate would also need proven experience and capability of preparing successful funding proposals and managing research projects from inception to completion. Strong managerial, organisational, budgeting/financial and scientific reporting skills, are essential requirements.

Competencies and Experience

  • A third-level qualification in ecology, ornithology or natural sciences, and further fourth-level specialisation in ornithology, preferable applied research ornithology.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter.
  • Strong analytical mind-set.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrable experience of securing funding for and delivering on research projects, ideally in the ornithology field.
  • A full driving licence.
