Kilderry Solar Farm

MKO secured planning permission for BayWa r.e Ireland for Kilderry Solar Farm, a 45 ha solar development located south of Johnswell village, Co. Kilkenny. Permission was granted on 15th October 2024. The approved solar farm has an estimated output of up to c. 37 MW AC (44 MWp DC), representing a significant contribution to renewable electricity generation in the South East region and strengthening national energy security through indigenous generation

Project overview

The successful delivery of this project was the result of a coordinated effort to overcome key design challenges and to fully realise the planning gains of the project. MKO lead in the delivery of Planning Consent through its Planning Renewables team, led by Sean McCarthy. MKO led engagement with the planning authority through the pre-planning process as well as community consultation events. Key challenges included the cumulative impact of renewable energy projects, traffic and construction management, Ecology and appropriate assessment, archaeological heritage, and Visual Impact. The project team provides comprehensive design and mitigation solutions to the project through iterative design and comprehensively addresses statutory and third-party concerns in a structured and transparent manner to secure permission. Ultimately, Kilderry Solar Farm is an environmentally responsible, landscape assimilated, ecologically sensitive renewable energy development.

Provision of planning advise to the multi-disciplinary design team which included Rubicon Heritage and Langan Consulting Engineers as well as the following MKO Service teams.

Screening for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and construction environmental management plan.

Landscape Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA), verified views and photomontage, glint and glare assessment and landscape mitigation plan.

Appropriate assessment natura impact statement and ecological impact assessment.
