PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Atlantic Technological University – Reconfiguration of ATU’s Room 509′ Lecture Theatre

Our Project Management team is providing project management services to ATU’s Galway City Campus for the conversion of the former ‘Room 509’ tiered lecture theatre. The construction works include reconfiguring the pre-existing double-height space into two levels and upgrading the fabric of the building to increase thermal performance. The ground floor will consist of an engineering workshop and an engineering laboratory while the first-floor level will contain a general science laboratory and a second engineering laboratory.

Project challenges

This project forms part of an ATU plan to increase the delivery of Electrical Apprentices. The addition of two new engineering labs, a general science lab and an engineering workshop to the ATU Galway City Campus is a key step in achieving this goal. The Irish Government’s “Careers in Construction: Action Plan” looks to bring 50,000 new entrants into the construction sector by 2030. Further to providing greater capacity for the delivery of apprentices, upgrading exterior panelling from 1970s concrete panels to insulated architectural panels will provide a significantly improved thermal envelope. This will result in greater comfort in the building with significantly reduced energy consumption. This project brings the interesting challenge of completing construction works on a section of an existing building within a busy university campus. Other areas of the building have remained occupied throughout the construction stage.
