PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Atlantic Technological University – Science labs

Our Project Management team provided project management services to ATU to construct six new science labs at the Galway City Campus to accommodate ATU’s growing School of Science. The work took place in two separate areas of the campus simultaneously. In Area A, three teaching labs replaced seven existing classrooms, while in Area B, an additional three science labs were constructed in place of an existing training kitchen, bar, restaurant, storage space, and an open-plan office.

Project challenges

The existing building, constructed circa 1972, featured concrete columns and beams, hollow blockwork infill, and large precast external panels. Internally, the walls were cavity blocks. In Area A, the existing classroom layout included tiered seating. The project addressed several challenges, necessitating meticulous planning to establish an effective delivery process. This project involved working within occupied buildings. MKO closely collaborated with ATU to ensure that during the construction phase, they successfully achieved two primary objectives: maintaining a smooth work progression in accordance with the programme and minimising the impact and disruption to the building occupants. The work included extensive updates to existing services while operating in a live environment with limited available downtime. The timeframe for Area A was challenging, as the work had to be completed during the summer holidays. Area A was completed on time and within the agreed budget. Area B is still ongoing but on track to be completed on time and within budget.
