Barrigone Quarry Restoration, Askeaton, Limerick

Roadstone commissioned MKO to prepare an Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR), Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) and Natura Impact Statement (NIS) to accompany a planning application for the proposed infilling and restoration of an existing quarry void at the Roadstone Barrigone Quarry site, Askeaton, Co. Limerick. MKO acted as overall project managers, with responsibility for the preparation of the EIAR and planning application. Input from several specialists was also required during the project.

Project overview

The key objectives of the project were to provide an increased area of calcareous grassland habitat as an extension to the Qualifying Interests (QI) habitats of the adjacent Barrigone Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and to provide additional foraging and roosting habitat for fauna including bats, badger and Marsh Fritillary Butterfly and other pollinators. The aim for the restoration would be that the habitat on top of the infilled quarry void would eventually develop characteristics of the Annex I habitat Semi-natural dry grasslands and scrubland facies on calcareous substrates (Festuco-Brometalia) (* important orchid sites) [6210] similar to that present within the adjacent Barrigone SAC. It is anticipated that the restoration work will provide an extension of this habitat type to the SAC based on the habitat creation measures outlined below. It is estimated that the infilling of the quarry void will take place over a period of approximately 20 years. After infilling is complete, a layer of crushed limestone will be spread over the infilled area. Following this, the crushed limestone layer will be capped with topsoil. Seed transfer will then commence from viable areas within the adjoining Barrigone SAC. MKO prepared the EIAR in order to document the current state of the environment in the vicinity of the proposed development site and to quantify the likely significant effects of the proposed development on the environment. MKO and the project teams detailed understanding of the ground conditions and ecology allowed us to support the quarry operator to overcome the hydrological and ecological challenges at the site.
