Derryclare Wild Western Peatland Project

Coillte Nature commissioned MKO to prepare an Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) to accompany a planning application for the restoration of approximately 343 hectares of coniferous forestry plantation for the purposes of peatland restoration and native scrub woodland establishment in the townlands of Derryclare and Cloonnacartan in Co. Galway. This type of restoration, forest-to-bog restoration, focuses on converting the land back to its natural state as peatland and native scrub woodland. The approach involves removing conifer trees, raising and stabilising water levels, and restoring the natural surface of the peat.

Project overview

The Derryclare property was selected as the first site in the Wild Western Peatlands Project because it represents all the expected challenges that are likely to be encountered during the restoration process at a single site. Derryclare will act as an important demonstration area for Coillte and other stakeholders in managing the significant challenges posed by inappropriate forestry planting in sensitive western peatland areas, and inform how best to manage other similar plantations in the future. The Proposed Project will restore up to 281 ha of blanket bog and wet heath habitat, as well as up to 62 ha of native scrub woodland. This initiative goes beyond mere restoration; it is a concerted effort to address Ireland’s pressing biodiversity, peatland rehabilitation, native woodland, and climate policy goals. The importance of this project cannot be overstated—it is a vital step toward creating a healthier ecosystem and a sustainable future for Ireland. By investing in this restoration, we are not only protecting our natural heritage but also paving the way for a resilient environment that can thrive for generations to come. Galway County Council granted planning permission to the Derryclare project on the 21st May 2025.
