Hannah is a Graduate Ornithologist and joined MKO in 2025 as part of our grad intake. Hannah studied Environmental Science at the University of Galway.
What sparked your interest in ornithology, and how did you decide to pursue it as a career?
For my undergraduate thesis, I studied overwintering waterbirds in turloughs. This experience sparked my interest in ornithology and helped me realise that I wanted to pursue it as a career.
Can you describe your typical day as an ornithologist?
A range of bird surveys are carried out daily on and around proposed and operational wind farm sites. These include vantage point surveys, transects, and waterbird distribution surveys, which may focus on individual species or multiple target species. Surveys are conducted at dawn or dusk, depending on the time of year, and are completed independently. The movements of target species are recorded and mapped in QGIS using a tablet, alongside the recording of weather conditions and non-target species in Excel.
What types of projects are you currently working on?
I am currently working on operational windfarms in Co. Galway carrying out vantage point surveys and walkover surveys. I am also working on Greenway projects based in Co. Clare which involve carrying out waterbird surveys.
What specific tools or equipment do you use in your ornithological surveys?
I use my tablet, binoculars, scope, tripod and lone working device during every survey.
How does MKO support your professional development in Ornithology?
MKO supports my professional development through on-the-job training, mentoring from experienced ornithologists, and opportunities to gain hands-on experience across a range of survey types. This support has helped me build confidence and develop my skills quickly.
How would you describe the culture at MKO?
The culture at MKO is fantastic. There are always different events being organised for the staff and there is a genuine sense of support and teamwork. As a graduate, I felt supported from the outset and encouraged to ask questions and learn from more experienced colleagues.
What do you enjoy most about your role at MKO?
Fieldwork and spending time outdoors are my favourite aspects of being an ornithologist. While working in challenging weather conditions can be demanding, it is also extremely rewarding.
What advice do you have for someone aspiring to pursue a career in Ornithology with MKO?
Gain as much field experience as possible and be open to learning. Being organised, adaptable, and comfortable working outdoors in all conditions will stand to you in this role.
