Ornithology team trip to Scattery Island

Our Ornithology team recently enjoyed a field trip to the beautiful Scattery Island in the Shannon Estuary, combining marine ecology, ornithology and cultural heritage into a fascinating day of learning. The day began in Kilrush with a visit to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group’s Shannon Dolphin Centre, where the team were given an overview of the research and conservation work that they do. They learned about the monitoring programme, photo-identification techniques and the challenges facing these iconic marine mammals provided the perfect introduction to a day centred on biodiversity and conservation.
From Kilrush Marina, the team boarded the ferry to Scattery Island (Inis Cathaigh).

Located on the Shannon Estuary, Scattery Island is renowned for its early Christian monastic settlement, round tower and medieval churches, all set within a Special Area of Conservation that supports a wealth of wildlife. On arrival, the team joined a guided tour led by the Office of Public Works, exploring the island’s ancient monastic settlement. The guide shared stories from St. Senan’s monastery to Viking raids and the lives of the island’s former residents.

In the afternoon, a member of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) led us around the island’s habitats. We were treated to excellent views of Hen Harriers as they flew around the island, including several food passes. We were able to explore sections of the island’s rocky shoreline, making our way towards the southern end where the lighthouse and historic artillery battery overlook the estuary. Throughout the walk, the team enjoyed spotting a variety of seabirds, waders and estuarine species while taking in the views across the Shannon Estuary.

Field trips like these provide valuable opportunities for our Ornithology team to expand their knowledge, share experience and strengthen connections with colleagues working across Ireland’s conservation sector. Scattery Island proved to be an inspiring reminder that Ireland’s natural and cultural heritage are deeply intertwined, offering lessons in ecology, history and conservation.
